Victorian Mother of Pearl Carved Ship Brooch

Description : Mother of Pearl is the nacre that forms on the inside of an oyster shell. The thickness is indicative of its age. This 2mm carving is 60mm across and 40mm wide, depicting a 'junk' or Chinese ship with fully battened sails. These were mainly trade ships that have sailed throughout Southeast Asia for over 150 years. The bronze wire appears to tether the sail to the boat and is a whimsical and organic detail.
